Rafa Nadal and Rodger Federer won’t be part of the 2020 US Open men’s singles, but many of the other big guns will play in the first major tennis tournament since the health crisis started. Novak Djokovic will be there, as well as younger stars like Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev, and Dominic Thiem.

It should be a cracking tournament and there will be plenty of betting opportunities. We already have the odds for the outright winner market, so let’s take a look at some of the contenders.

Open odds, men's final picks: Tennis expert reveals predictions for Thiem vs. Zverev Elite tennis expert Sean Calvert just released his coveted picks for Sunday's men's final between.

In this post, I explore the favorite and several sleepers, before wrapping it up with my US Open 2020 prediction and betting pick for the men’s title.

Let’s begin with the main candidates for the title and see what their chances are.

Novak Djokovic; -120

It’s hardly a shocker that Novak Djokovic is the main favorite of the best US Open betting sites. Even if Federer and Nadal were around, you would still expect to see the Serbian as the top contender for another Grand Slam crown.

He loves playing on hard courts and was devastating at the Australian Open early in the year. Djokovic has won the US Open three times already and certainly feels confident in his chances.

On the negative side, he just pulled out of the Western & Southern Open because of an injury. Let’s not forget that Nole is 33 and the long pause might have affected his condition in a negative fashion.

He remains a favorite, but I don’t think that backing him has any value when the price is so low.

There’s little doubt that Dominic Thiem has been the most consistent player from the younger generation and the one to truly challenge the Big Three on the highest level. The Austrian is still searching for his maiden Grand Slam title after losing three finals, though.

He’s strong, confident and at the right age. Thiem will be 27 on September 3 and the only top contender that will be in his peak years. The rest of the pack will be either on the wrong end of 30, like Djokovic, or in their early 20s.

Men

That shouldn’t be underestimated after the global pandemic and the long break. A guy like Thiem who’s in his best age could have a physical advantage over the rest. If you add the mentality of a true champion that he carries, the world number 3 certainly is a good choice.

Another advantage is that he will be the second seed in New York in the absence of Rafa Nadal which means he won’t have to face Novak Djokovic before the final of the US Open 2020.

Daniil Medvedev; +650

One man that will be eager to return to New York is Daniil Medvedev. The Russian established himself as a top player during the US Open last year. He reached the final and pushed Rafa Nadal to five sets before barely losing.

Medvedev also won a bunch of tournaments on hard courts after that and looked like the best player in the world for a while. He was fatigued at the start of the 2020 campaign and this affected his performance, but the long pause might’ve worked in his favor.

The Russian had the chance to recharge his batteries and return to his best. Medvedev is going to be a dangerous opponent and might very well be the 2020 US Open winner when it’s all said and done.

I probably wouldn’t have placed Stefanos Tsitsipas among the main contenders under normal circumstances, but with Federer and Nadal missing and Djokovic injured, the Greek prodigy certainly has a shot at the title.

Tsitsipas is only 22 and has failed to reach his best at Grand Slams which is to be expected at his age. And yet, he did win the ATP Finals in 2019 and has showcased his remarkable talent multiple times in Masters events.

The main problem is that the Grand Slams are gruesome and require consistency that’s hard to find when you’re so young. Tsitsipas needs to improve before winning a Major, but that seems bound to happen at some point of his career.

While the US Open 2020 might be too early, you never know when a guy with such amazing skills will explode.

Sleepers for the Men’s 2020 US Open

I decided to include some sleepers in my US Open 2020 men prediction despite the fact that we’ve seen mostly the same small group of players on top for what seems like forever. With Nadal and Federer out of the competition, the chance for an unexpected winner certainly rises.

Let’s take a look at some of the best candidates for a surprise.

I’m not 100% sure that a player like Alexander Zverev belongs to the dark horses section. However, for all of his talent, the youngster is yet to reach a Grand Slam final and the odds of the bookies certainly suggest they don’t view him as a favorite in the 2020 US Open.

Similarly to Tsitsipas, Zverev has struggled to stay consistent enough on the biggest stage and that’s normal for his age. His best performance came in the 2020 Australian Open where he reached the last 4 which might be a sign that the German is ready to step up.

The odds are certainly tempting and he’s poised for a good run in the absence of Federer and Nadal. And yet, winning the whole thing might be a step too far.

Andrey Rublev, +2500

Another young prodigy that will be looking for a breakout is Andrey Rublev. The Russian has the talent to succeed and he already had some good moments in New York. Rublev reached the last in 2017 when he was only 19.

He has struggled to achieve the same heights during Grand Slam events since, but we’ve seen him beat some of the top players in smaller tournaments.

The problem is that the US Open 2020 will require from any potential winner to play some excellent tennis for an extended period of time. I don’t think Rublev is ready for that.

My last inclusion might surprise some people, but I believe that Matteo Berrettini should be in the conversation. The young Italian has some powerful weapons and already reached a semifinal in the US Open last year.

He’s been a constant threat on the tour ever since the start of the previous season and looks like a younger version of Juan Marin del Potro. He has a powerful serve and forehands, but needs to work on his backhand.

Vegas Odds On Men's Us Open Tennis

I don’t that Berrettini is ready to win a Grand Slam yet, but he can beat anyone on a good day.

My Prediction and Betting Picks

Men's Us Open Golf Odds

The most sensible prediction for the US Open 2020 men’s singles tournament would be that Novak Djokovic wins. The Serbian has been in a league of his own and his two big rivals Federer and Nadal are gone.

Following that with a wager on Nole doesn’t seem like a good idea, though. He is fighting an injury and the odds are set at -120 which way too low.

Us Open Mens Odds

I believe that several players could really challenge the Serbian and the prices for them to lift the trophy represent better value. Dominic Thiem and Daniil Medvedev are available for +500 and +650 respectively, so you can afford to back both of them and those are my US Open 2020 betting picks for the men’s tournament.

  • Pick 1: Dominic Thiem; +500
  • Pick 2: Daniil Medvedev; +650

Our team will be working hard to provide regular betting picks during the 2020 US Open and they will be published in the picks sections of our site as soon as the tournament is here.
